Landed cost into South Africa: what to include

What sits between a factory price and the cost of a braai product on your shelf in South Africa: freight, duty, VAT, clearing and delivery.

Updated

A factory quote is rarely the price you pay. Landed cost is everything it takes to get stock into your store or warehouse, divided by the units.

The usual parts

  • Product and branding, as quoted by the factory.
  • Packaging and cartons.
  • Sea or air freight, usually priced by volume for bulky items like braai grids.
  • Customs duty, which depends on the tariff classification of each product.
  • Import VAT at 15%, which SARS calculates on an uplifted customs value.
  • Clearing agent and port charges.
  • Delivery from the port to you.

How we quote it

Every quote shows the factory price and an estimated landed cost per unit, with each assumption written down: incoterm, freight method, tariff classification and exchange rate. Estimates are confirmed by a clearing agent before you commit.

Tips

  • Ask for carton dimensions early. Freight on braai grids is all about volume.
  • Detachable handles and nesting baskets cut carton size.
  • Compare landed cost, not unit price.
